Who is Modern Workweek
Modern Workweek is the official blog of The Interactive Dept, a creative web studio located in Portland, Oregon. It’s founder Greg Spies has worked hard to reshape the paradigm that is “working”. Through a combination of technology, time management, clear thinking and new ideas – Spies has begun carving out a different way to look at one’s career – and the boundaries in which that world must exist.
The idea to start a blog about this modern lifestyle sprung from conversations with friends and colleagues while Spies was living in Barcelona, Spain for two months in 2008. In Barcelona, Spies was able to witness a different lifestyle – one where time and family and culture took precedence over work. This did not mean the work suffered, or that one couldn’t take pride in the way they made a living. Quite the contrary. By focusing on life, and putting work in the proper context within those goals, one could arrange their time and efforts accordingly to achieve great happiness, fulfillment and reward. This freedom from preconceived notions of what a work-week should look like allowed Spies to experiment with life-patterns that worked best for his interests, and while from the outside it may have appeared he was doing less, in fact he was doing more.
It was simply by chance that this realization occurred just as the world economy was beginning to collapse. An economy setup on rigid time-management, misplaced priorities and a philosophy that sacrifices autonomy and creativity for alignment and perceived rewards. While this world may have been propped up with bail-outs in the past year to maintain it’s dominance, there is no doubt that it is contrary to human will, and shall inevitably fall. And a clear vision, a new day, a modern workweek will arise.
How does one make a full-time salary, working for themselves, pursuing their passions, all while controlling their time and managing to travel for 1/4 of the year. We shall see.
